Here are tips on how to prepare for a Telemarketing interview.

Dress Professionally
Do not assume that because your job may not involve face-to-face interactions with customers that you should not wear a suit to the interview. What you wear tells an interviewer a lot about the type of person that you are and the type of employee that you will be. Wearing the appropriate clothes tells the interviewer that you are professional, that you take yourself and job seriously and respect your employers.

Know the Language
Telemarketers have their own language. Terms like “average talk time,” “outbound call center,” “cold calling” and “direct marketing” are routinely used and may be used during the interview. If asked whether you have experience cold calling companies, you do not want to have to ask what cold calling is. Knowing some basic telemarketing terms shows you are competent and have done your research prior to interview.

Prepare Your Own Questions
Many interview candidates spend all their time worrying about what they might be asked and very little time preparing their own questions. However, asking questions at the end of an interview tells the interviewer that you are genuinely interested in the job and that you have given some thought to your career choice, rather than just taking the interview on a whim. There may be an opportunity to ask questions during the interview, but do not interrupt the interviewer or change the subject. Let the interviewer dictate the course of the interview and at the end of the interview politely ask the interviewer if he can answer a couple of questions.

Google Tech Talk August 17, 2010 ABSTRACT “Channels & Conflict: Consumer Response to Digital Media Distribution, and its Impact on Physical Sales and Internet Piracy” Presented by Michael D. Smith, with introduction by Hal Varian. The availability of digital channels for media distribution has raised several important questions for marketers, notably whether digital distribution channels will cannibalize physical sales and whether legitimate digital distribution channels will dissuade consumers from using (illegitimate) digital piracy channels. We examine these two questions using a series of “natural experiments” involving changes in the distribution of media on digital channels. Our results suggest that (1) online “free” distribution can complement legitimate purchases of media goods, (2) legitimate digital distribution channels can reduce the demand for piracy, and (3) that digital distribution is unlikely to cannibalize sales in physical channels in the short-term. Michael D. Smith is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Marketing and co-director of the Center for Digital Media Research at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Smith’s research relates to analyzing structure and competition in online markets and substitution effects between legitimate digital distribution channels, piracy channels, and physical channels for media products. His research in this area has been published by outlets including The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Sloan Management
