How to determine if a company is forwarding their sales tax?

Question:

How to determine if a company is forwarding their sales tax?

I purchased a fairly expensive piece of equipment from a company over the Internet that in the description of the item claimed sales tax would have to be paid in several states including mine. I was fine with this except for in the end, they charged the wrong tax amount (3% more than my actual tax rate). After going back and forth with them and them finally figuring out I was correct on my tax amount, the refunded the difference. This made me wonder if they are even reporting/sending the tax amount to the state tax collectors. How would I go about determining if this company is even sending the tax on to the state or just pocketing the money. The whole process of dealing with them, they just seemed like a shady company.

You could contact the sales tax office in your state and inquire if this company pays sales tax.

It would be difficult for you to tract individual sale transactions. Companies who collect sales tax have forms and quarterly reports to submit. Periodically, they get audited. If they don’t have all their ducks in a row, they have to pay sales tax out of their own packets.

The company probably just keyed in the wrong county or something.

Q&A: What is the best way to set up commisioned sales for my company?

What is the best way to set up commisioned sales for my company?

We have a commissioned sales staff here. Our commissions are paid as a percentage of the margin, not of the gross sale. This gives the salesperson an incentive to keep the margin up where it should be. This does require you to share cost information with your sales staff. We are a very open company. I want our employees to know when we are doing well and when we are not. When we do well, they do well.

In our business, commissions usually are in the 8 to 10% range when calculated on the gross sale. We pay 4% of the margin instead. Our employees seem to like it. We allow them some discression in the pricing of the items they sell.

I think repeat orders should be treated just like an original sale and commission paid the same. If an outside sales person does not call on the account for a pre-specified period of time, the account should revert to the house for reorders until such time as the salesperson does go call on the account.

Question:

What is the best way to launch a National Sales Team for my small company?

Hello,

I have a small Nutraceutical company with large growth. I would like to launch a National campaign seeking retail sales reps and direct distributors who market to retailers. I have great margins and I even have a corporate discount program that markets to large businesses. What is the best way to unfold this?

Two of the best guides to developing a new sales force are these short articles here: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/ara_howtohireawinnin and here: http://www.nationalsalescenter.com/2009/04/how-to-hire-great-sales-reps/

Two key elements they mention that I find most valuable are:

1. Seriously consider getting a recruiting service to help you, especially when you need talent in cities where you don’t live. They may also be able to offer advice on competitive salary and compensation needs.

2. Ask your top customers or distributors who are the salesmen they most admire or are impressed with. Then contact them to know if they’d be willing to work for you or, if not, whom they may know that would be as good as they are.

Best of luck!
